"Cannot obtain a server-assigned IP address..." after plugging device into computer.

Problem:
Shortly after plugging your Windows Mobile 5/6 device into your PC via a USB port, the following notification appears on your mobile device's screen:

"Cannot obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings"

Solution:
  1. On the mobile device, go to Start --> Settings --> Connections tab --> USB to PC.
  2. If the "Enable advanced network functionality" option is selected, deselect it & vice versa.
  3. Tap OK to save changes.
  4. You may need to soft reset your device.

After making this change, your computer will recognize a new device & install the appropriate driver software for it automatically.  If prompted, click "Continue" to install the driver.

ActiveSync should detect your device properly without needing to create a new partnership.  The error should no longer appear on your mobile device.

THANK YOU! This solved the problem. Verizon was telling me that I had to do a registry edit on my computer.
